One of the problems in our business is that anybody can call themselves an energy consultant. We saw a lot of this in 2017 particularly in procurement with call centers from the UK calling lots of clients offering to purchase gas and electricity despite the fact they seem to know almost nothing about the Irish energy market.
In contrast to having ‘deep level’ expertise I would estimate that 90% of people in this business are clueless and work by imitation, narrow mimicry & role-playing.
Another trap that people fall into is to pick the cheapest contractor when doing a project. The cheapest option usually incurs quality compromises that cost much more indirectly in the long run. There is a Old Chinese proverb ‘Good, no cheap. Cheap no good’. It is much better to work with ‘A’ players and get quality work done.
‘A’ players are not that hard to identify. They have the correct academic qualifications, they typically have been in the business a long time and have a track record of successful projects under their belt.
